2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament Raises Awareness, Money and Competition

On March 11, 2006, Fernwood Hotel & Resort hosted the 2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament held in the Event Center. Eight teams came together for the competition of all competitions. The competition to raise awareness and money for the Greg Moyer Defibrillator Fund and the human competition to be the winning team of the tournament. A total of $1617.84 was presented to Rachel Moyer at the 93.5 WSBG studio on May 23, 2006. Teams included 93.5 WSBG, Blue Ridge Communications, the YMCA, Resorts USA, Inc., Fernwood Hotel & Resort, Notre Dame High School and two teams consisting of friends and family of Greg Moyer.

The tournament was played in a Round Robin fashion where teams played each other two times and were then seeded into a Single Elimination Tournament. Each team member received official tournament T-shirts. Friends and family of the players were invited to cheer and watch the tournament free of charge. After three hours of play, the team from Notre Dame High School earned first place with the team from Fernwood Hotel & Resort in second place.

Notre Dame High School will keep the tournament trophy at the school and will defend their title at the 3rd Annual Dodgeball Tournament, which will be held in early 2007. Resorts USA’s team captain and CFO, Kevin Lavelle comments, “We are so pleased with the success of this tournament and we hope that the event will continue to grow in future years. Many of the teams from last year’s event participated again and said they had just as much fun this year if not more fun than last year because more teams were involved. It’s great to see local companies come together and raise money for such a great cause.” The Greg Moyer Defibrillator Fund was originally set up to donate AEDs to local schools. It has now broadened to helping organizations purchase AEDs, educate the public on the use, importance, and simplicity of AEDs, train the public in CPR and encourage and support the State and Federal legislation in placing AEDs in all schools and public facilities.
